Carpenter’s Pub Set to Open Today in Black Rock, Reviving a Local Legacy with a New Ownership Trio

Listed in

Black Rock is buzzing with anticipation as Carpenter’s Pub prepares to officially open its doors at 2931 Fairfield Avenue as of 3 PM today—and this isn’t just another bar opening. It’s the revival of a neighborhood legacy, reimagined by a powerhouse trio: Joseph Farrell, Sean Nye, and Marty McCarthy.

For longtime locals, this moment feels both nostalgic and brand‑new. The space has been transformed from the inside out, the energy is different, and the team behind it has deep roots in the very block it calls home.

Joe Farrell Returns to Black Rock

Before Carpenter’s Pub, Farrell made his mark with Walrus + Carpenter, the award‑winning Black Rock smokehouse that became a neighborhood institution. Known for inventive barbecue, craft beer, and a warm, lived‑in vibe, Walrus + Carpenter earned praise from CTBites, Total Food Service, and diners across Connecticut. After a landlord dispute, in 2020 Walrus + Carpenter sadly closed its doors, and Farrell focused his energy on his other restaurant locations and projects.

Carpenter’s Pub marks Farrell’s return to the block where it all began—literally. But this time, the concept is intentionally different. The menu will feature upscale American pub fare, craft cocktails, and a uniquely distinct neighborhood ambiance.

Sean Nye Is At It Again

Nye’s history in hospitality goes well beyond his time bartending at Walrus + Carpenter. He has worked with multiple restaurant groups to bring life to their concepts, through his skills managing and training. This time, instead of helping others open restaurants, he is proud to be part owner in this incredible restaurant project. We are surely going to see his skill bring this place to life.

Introducing CoOwner Marty McCarthy Who Brings His 26 Years On Fairfield Avenue To The Next Level

Marty McCarthy, a name synonymous with Black Rock hospitality. McCarthy has owned and operated restaurants on the same block of Fairfield Avenue for 26 years, including the wildly popular Fire Engine Pizza Company, which now spans Bridgeport, Milford & Shelton.

His longevity on the avenue isn’t just impressive—it’s foundational. McCarthy has watched the neighborhood evolve, helped shape its nightlife identity, and built a loyal following that spans generations. His presence brings deep neighborhood credibility and a steady hand to the new venture.

A Leadership Team Built On Experience, Creativity & Community

Farrell brings more than a decade of restaurant innovation, brand‑building, and community‑driven hospitality.

Nye has spent his career specializing in ground‑up restaurant renovations, operations, and guest‑experience design—skills that shaped the dramatic transformation of the Carpenter’s Pub space.

Together with McCarthy’s decades of neighborhood experience, the trio forms one of the most seasoned ownership teams in Fairfield County.

A New Gathering Place On Fairfield Avenue

The transformation of the space is dramatic—and intentional. The team wanted Carpenter’s Pub to feel familiar but not derivative, honoring the building’s history without recreating any previous concept.

Design Changes & Interior Transformation

  • The stage is gone, opening up the room.
  • The kitchen window has been covered, creating a cleaner, more cohesive layout.
  • The brick interior has been covered, giving the space a brighter, more modern feel.
  • The canopy above the bar and the exterior awning have been removed.
  • The bar top and high‑tops are crafted from the original duckpin bowling lanes salvaged from Barnum Duckpin in Stratford—a detail that adds warmth, history, and a gorgeous natural wood finish.
  • Duckpin lanes are used throughout the space, tying the design together.
  • Bright subway tile and back‑bar bottle lighting bring a fresh glow to the room.
  • Popcorn and plaid wallpaper add personality and a touch of playful nostalgia.
  • A Vestaboard displays rotating messages, giving the pub a dynamic, modern heartbeat.

The result is a space that feels nothing like Carpenter’s Pub of the past, yet still unmistakably Black Rock—warm, energetic, and built for regulars.
