Shakuntalam is a famous play by Sanskrit poet Kalidas in the 5th century CE. It’s considered one of the most important Indian literary works. “Abhigyan Shakuntalam” is a love story where Shakuntala, raised by the sage Kanva, meets King Dushyanta, who visits the hermitage on a hunting expedition. The play exemplifies Shakuntala and Dushyant’s marriage, separation, and reunion. Their child was named Bharata, the synonmous ancestor of the Indian nation. Shakuntalam is the first Indian play ever to be translated into Western languages. This play as at least 46 translations in 12 different European langauages.
