Sign of the Whale is a great spot for the seafood lovers out there and even for the seafood haters! They have so many yummy ever-changing options to choose from! They have great roasted chicken and truly mouth watering coconut shrimp! We tried a bunch of appetizers, entrees and desserts and not one of them disappointed and neither did their service!
They have a beautiful view of the harbor point from the rooftop bar and they have a relaxing laidback type of restaurant vibe going on while simultaneously having a lively bar area indoors or outdoors! See below for some of the yummy things we tried!
We started off with the appetizer, the mouthwatering coconut shrimp!
The entree up next was the yummy Pasta Pescatore
And we finished the night with the tasty banana spring rolls with some ice cream!
See below for our Q&A with the manager, Erik!
When did Sign of the Whale first open?
“It opened just over 9 years ago, this past summer being our 10th.”
What is the inspiration behind Sign of the Whale?
“The vision and inspiration behind Sign of the Whale was a guy named Todd who is one of the owners. He saw the potential of a rooftop restaurant in an undesirable area at the time. Sign of the Whale was built up and made it a different area. The neighborhood started changing and this restaurant supplied the people with a nice outdoor area.”
What are some of your favorite dishes?
“The wings are excellent, roasted chicken entree is a day one staple that I describe as life changing. The whale burger is also great and it even won a couple awards!”
What is your favorite drink?
“Well I won a couple bartending competitions so it is hard to pick only one as my favorite. The espresso martinis are very popular and the strawberry mule was my first award so it will always have a special meaning for me. I also love a great sangria.”
What is your favorite dessert?
“I am not a big dessert guy, but the banana spring rolls are pretty good. They are a newer type of dessert and have been on the menu for a long time.”
Are there any upcoming events ?
“We have private events all the time. However, some specials are happening in the beginning of October, one being pumpkin and apple picking, but with a twist. The pumpkin and apple will be hard ciders. It is something you’ll just have to come check out! There are also specials during all the football games, an upcoming halloween party and brunch. Make sure to stay tuned on social media to keep up with all the events and specials going on @signofthewhale”
Are there any new menu items?
“Yes! There is the butternut squash ravioli, short ribs, buffalo chicken empanadas, and the fall arugula salad that are new to the menu. There is a lot of new stuff for fall and there are no paper menus! They are online because the menu is constantly changing. We are always adding new stuff and taking things away and our prices change with the economy. We are always trying to make the menu better for people!”
When’s the busiest time?
“The summer is crazy, if it’s nice out we’re busy. During the year, it is the busiest on a Saturday night and Sunday brunch into the afternoon!”
How’s the Harbor Point area?
“I love it! It has a cool energy and most of the people here aren’t from Stamford. They move because of a good job and they tend to be late college kids. There are always a lot of people walking their dogs. It is easy to walk around and anyone who lives in harbor point gets 15% off!”
What’s the aesthetic this restaurant is going for?
“We are going for somewhere in between fine dining and more than a bar. I’d say a laidback country club bar. We want to be casual but adult friendly.”
