Tell me a little about yourself and why you opened Marianne’s pantry?
“I am a little late in life opening a new business, but I worked for my family for 25 years and when they sold the company I needed something to do. Since I cook and bake so much for my family and love it, I decided to open Marianas! I also wanted to bring a place like this to my hometown of Trumbull, because there’s nothing else really like it. It’s just a great place for people, a little community where everybody knows everybody by first name. It’s also good food. I wanted to make something that wasn’t fast food and something fresh.”
How did you come up with the name?
“Marianna is my mom! My mom was a nurse who always worked nights. Both my parents are Italian and my dad always jokes we should have named it after him because he cooked more when we were growing up. Marianna’s just has a nice ring to it, and I wanted to do it for her!”
Where did the bee theme come from?
“For some reason I’ve always loved bees. When my oldest daughter Alexandra was born, the theme of her nursery was bees so I wanted to incorporate bees into the restaurant in some way. A lot of my menu items use honey so I thought it would be cute. I had my daughter, who was 13 at the time, draw the logo – which is actually the logo we have today. One day, we were looking up bees and it talked about how they’re a hardworking community which makes total sense for our restaurant. Then I looked up the meaning of my name, which in Greek means Honeybee. Everything was meant to be!”
How would you describe Marianne’s pantry; the food, its atmosphere?
“It’s very cozy! Whether you have your kids with you or your laptop for work, it suits every vibe! It’s friendly and a wonderful community. The food has a flare of Italian food but it is definitely an Americanized menu with both comfort food and healthy items. We are always trying to offer healthy specials and offer both gluten and dairy free menu items. The main thing for me about the menu is something I’ve always said. I always said if I was going to open a place, I would not cut corners and I stuck with it! I’m so glad that I did because we make everything ourselves! Nothing is bought or poured out of a can, our soups are made fresh daily, our pesto, our hummus, even your sundried tomatoes are made in house!”
What would you recommend visitors try when they come to Marianna’s Pantry?
“I usually steer them to the Alexandra (pictured above) because everyone loves that. Believe it or not, the Tuna Melt is one of my favorites and everyone goes crazy for it because our tuna is so good! We make it in house. I would also say that the Trumbull, the Greek, and the Gina are my top three that you can never go wrong with!”
Does Marianna’s pantry offer catering?
“We do a lot of catering! We don’t have a specific catering menu on our site (which will be up soon). Catering is definitely available but I usually discuss one on one with people and will figure out what would be perfect for their event. I ask how old they are, their favorite things, what they love, and we come up with a menu. For example, if I’m catering a kid’s party, we make Mac and Cheese bites and things not usually offered on our menu but we can do it for catering!”
