There is just a little over two weeks until St. Patricks Day and all the restaurants on Fairfield Avenue are not only gearing up for actual St. Paddy’s Day, but also, The Black Rock Sham Rock Pub Crawl and Parade. These are festivities that you don’t want to miss out on! Black Rock is filled with many Irish-tied establishments, party is an understatement.
Chris Andrews, owner of Tautog Tavern, opened the New England style pub back in 2013 after he fell in love with the community. He grew up in Cork, Ireland and spent a majority of his 20’s in Munich, Germany. He then took a year to backpack through Southeast Asia before settling in New York City. Chris and his best friend, who is also co owner, soon joined Fayerweather Yacht Club which opened his eyes to the beloved Black Rock.
Tautog Tavern has a historic feel. Its walls have maps and photos of vintage Bridgeport, alongside snapshots of the USS Tautog, a World War II submarine built in Groton that sank more enemy ships than any other.
Andrews aims to bring only the best products to Tautog Tavern. From the 121 year old hunk of wood he uses as his bar top to the tasting of 25 pounds of hamburger meat to make their signature “Tavern Burger.” It is a true New England style tavern that goes to great lengths to bring the best food to the area.
